the story behind veronica deszberg Meet the individual behind the artistry
About the Artist
Veronica’s parents were weary of the oppression and political tension in their home country, so they uprooted 9-year-old Veronica to give her opportunities unavailable in Hungary.  The family left Budapest on Oct. 22, 1956, one day before the official beginning of the violent Hungarian revolution, and immigrated to America.

Veronica had a difficult time adjusting to America. She wished she had pretty clothes and jewelry like her peers, so she could fit in better. It was this desire that fueled her thirst for design.

“I have always felt that femininity is enhanced by accessories,” she says. “If you look back in time, women have always adorned themselves and were lavished with gifts of jewels by their admirers. Today we are independent and self-supporting – and although a gift is always welcome – women like to do their own thing!”

Veronica didn’t become a designer immediately. It was a journey full of ups and downs. While in college, she worked at a cosmetics company on the corner of 53rd Street and Fifth Avenue in New York City, developing her talents working with color. One day, a fire destroyed the store, and one of her regular customers asked what she was going to do.

“As the tears poured out of my eyes – fearing that my cats would have no food to eat – I said I didn’t know,” Veronica says. The customer happened to be a VP for Fortunoff and told Veronica to apply for a position with the jewelry retailer. “And that is how I went from red lipstick to rubies.”

It wasn’t until she was in her 30s that Veronica began designing her own jewelry. She honed her skills working for Jolie Gabor, mother of actress/socialites Magda, Zsa Zsa, and Eva Gabor.

Veronica had many duties. She merchandised the store, managed the staff and handled public relations tasks. Most importantly, she designed authentic-looking costume jewelry for Jolie and her daughters to wear to public events, like the “Night of 1,000 Stars” at Radio City Music Hall. She also worked special projects with Fortunoff’s designers, creating jewelry to complement their runway collections.

Her work was the springboard into a career as a professional jewelry designer. In addition to the affordable, versatile pieces in her collection, Veronica continues to create custom, special-occasion pieces for private NYC clients.
